Heterobasidion annosum (Fr.:Fr.) Bref.
![]() |
Heterobasidion annosum fruiting bodies. It can be also observed the great amounts of spores produced by Heterobasidion annosum fruting bodies. |
![]() |
Usually Heterobasidion annosum fruiting bodies appear to be very hidden, due to this, the presence of the pathogen can be easily undetected. |
![]() |
Recently cut trees are easily infected by Heterobasidion annosum spores. |
![]() |
Pathogen spores also infect fresh wounds, like in this case, in which the tree was injured by the construction of a road. |
|
Although trees are cut, their stumps can still keep growing. This occurs because the roots in forest are interconnected. As a result, from an infected stump or tree, Heterobasidion annosum is able to colonize the roots of surrounding healthy trees. |
![]() |
Dominant layer windthrown tree. Most of its roots were previously decayed by Heterobasidion annosum. |
![]() |
Broken tree in an advanced decay state, showing Heterobasidion annosum fruiting bodies. |
![]() |
White fibrous and dry decay of wood produced by Heterobasidion annosum. |
![]() |
Advanced decay. Heterobasidion annosum rot has probably raised from roots. |
![]() |
